Ch. 1 & 2 Reflection

The writers of this text have made it an easy read for students like myself who are not very fond of history as a subject. I am very excited about this!

Chapter 1 begins with a look at the Hadza people and their way of life, which was hunting, collecting berries and honey, and would migrate as animals would migrate. It is amazing to read that this was the way of life for more than 95% of the time humans have been on this planet. And it's is true, I do not ever recall learning about the Paleolithic or Neolithic eras in great detail during high school. We usually did start with the early civilization of Egypt and China. They go unnoticed.

The map of time on pg. 13 looks as far back as 250,000 years ago where Homo sapiens roamed in Africa. Scientists are more than positive that this is where culture developed. After, migration led to the Middle East, Europe and Asia where archeologists found that these early humans may have developed technologies for hunting. about 15,000 years after, migration took humans to Australia, most likely on boats. This is pretty interesting to me because it is really mind blowing to imagine that early humans thought to make a form of transportation, and it worked out to be something that we use in present day. From Australia, it took a while for humans to migrate to the Americas, led here from Siberia. The land was occupied by what researchers call Clovis people. Nice to know that these were the first kind of humans to be known on this land.

Another fascinating note is that the text reads that the population grew to 6 million about 10,000 years ago. Paleolithic people were free of human tyranny and oppression, more than any other human society. Men and women's roles were also pretty equal. What a time to be alive!

Chapter 2 covers the first civilizations. Civilization replaced the already existent ways of life during 3500 BCE. The earliest civilization of Sumer gave the world the first written language that was not used by every one at the time. Egyptian civilization was created around this time as well. There we read about Peru's civilization that is less talked about.

We read about how hierarchies of class formed and see that inequality formed as wealth was only stacking higher rather than rationalized.
